2026 Panini Obsidian Football returns after a year off as a one-pack, seven-card Hobby box with two autographs and two memorabilia cards, plus a First Off the Line version with extra exclusives. This preview sets out what Panini's own October 7 blog post confirms, what secondary calendars add, and what is still missing before the October 21 date they list.

TL;DR: Panini's blog (October 7, 2026) lists the Hobby box as one seven-card pack with one patch autograph, one other autograph, two memorabilia cards, one insert and two base cards. First Off the Line makes the patch autograph a FOTL exclusive and adds an exclusive parallel. Black Color Blast and Black Stained Glass are the case hits. October 21 comes from secondary calendars only, and we found no odds sheet on October 10, 2026.

2026 Panini Obsidian Football: the short version (quick answer)

2026 Panini Obsidian Football is Panini's dark-chrome football product for 2026, sold in Hobby and Hobby First Off the Line (FOTL) boxes. Panini's blog says it "returns for 2026, boasting its trademark blend of dark Opti-Chrome aesthetics in both Hobby and Hobby First Off the Line variations." Every box is one pack of seven cards.

Key Takeaways

  • Two formats: Hobby and Hobby First Off the Line, both "7 Cards per pack" and "1 Pack per box."
  • Hobby box: one patch auto, one other auto, two memorabilia cards, one insert, two base cards.
  • FOTL changes: the patch auto becomes a FOTL exclusive, plus an exclusive parallel and three FOTL-only chases.
  • Case hits: Black Color Blast and Black Stained Glass, per Panini.
  • Players: college stars and retired legends; Panini names Drew Brees, Gunner Stockton, Bo Jackson and Julian Sayin.
  • Release: October 21, 2026 for Hobby on secondary calendars; the FOTL auction opened October 13 (DK Network); Panini showed "Coming Soon" with no date.
  • Odds: none published that we could find on October 10, 2026.

Overview: what Panini has confirmed about 2026 Panini Obsidian Football

The official source is a Panini America blog post by Isaiah Lucas, dated October 7, 2026. It says the release "features some of the top players from collegiate contests alongside the best that the professional league offers," and names headliners: "look for headliners like Drew Brees, Gunner Stockton, Bo Jackson and Julian Sayin, who also graces the outer packaging of 2026 Panini Obsidian Football."

Checklist Insider, a secondary source, adds context: "Following a hiatus for the 2025 season, 2026 Panini Obsidian Football is back with dark Optichrome hits from the gridiron." On licensing it says: "No longer licensed by the NFL, the cards feature a selection of former pros and current NIL stars." The background is on NFL.com, which reported in April 2026 that Fanatics Collectibles, the NFL and the NFLPA "announced Topps’ exciting return as the NFL and NFLPA’s official exclusive trading card licensee," including "the rights to use official team logos, names, marks, helmet designs and uniforms."

You can see it on Panini's sample cards. They print a city or a school rather than a team name: "NEW ORLEANS" on Drew Brees, "INDIANAPOLIS" on Peyton Manning, "OHIO STATE" on Julian Sayin. For the wider fall schedule, our late October 2026 release guide lists Obsidian next to the Topps products dated that week.

Analysis: 2026 Panini Obsidian Football Hobby vs First Off the Line

What does each box hold? Panini prints a line-by-line list for both formats. The Hobby list adds up to exactly seven cards, one pack. The FOTL list swaps the patch autograph for a FOTL-exclusive one and adds a FOTL-exclusive parallel, so it has eight lines for the same seven-card pack; Panini does not say which line doubles up.

Read the box art too. The FOTL box in Panini's product image says "FIND 2 AUTOGRAPHS & 2 MEMORABILIA CARDS! PER BOX, ON AVERAGE." The blog list reads like a fixed count, while the box adds "on average." Checklist Insider uses the same hedge: "On average, each Hobby box should deliver two autographs and two memorabilia cards." Our product guide explains why an average across a print run is a weaker promise than a hit in every box.

FOTL numbering. Panini says FOTL "features everything in the Hobby variation plus additional guaranteed pulls." Checklist Insider describes it as "the online-exclusive 1st Off the Line (FOTL) format with one exclusive parallel (/21 or less) and patch autograph (/21 or less)." Panini's post does not print those serial numbers, so treat /21 as secondary until Panini posts a checklist. Our explainer on numbered cards covers what a /21 print run means.

Analysis: 2026 Panini Obsidian Football case hits

Panini's post names two: "Case hits like Black Color Blast and Black Stained Glass combine with" an autograph roster of "rising stars, modern icons and retired legends." The side of the box repeats it: "LOOK FOR THE ULTRA-RARE BLACK COLOR BLAST & BLACK STAINED GLASS!"

The Black Stained Glass sample is a dual card. It pairs Randy Moss, printed with "MINNESOTA," and Calvin Johnson, printed with "DETROIT," in a grey stained-glass frame titled "BLACK STAINED GLASS DUALS." Checklist Insider calls these "all-new Black Stained Glass Duals."

Panini's post gives no case size and no case-hit ratio. Checklist Insider, a secondary source, lists "12 boxes per case."

Analysis: autographs, inserts and the players named so far

Panini's post shows seven sample cards. Read as printed on the cards, they cover these sets:

  • Orbital jersey autograph: Gunner Stockton, "QUARTERBACK," in a red Georgia helmet with a red, black and white patch.
  • Lava jersey autograph: Drew Brees, "NEW ORLEANS," with a patch window and signature.
  • Color Burst signature: Peyton Manning, "INDIANAPOLIS."
  • Atomic Initials insert: Bo Jackson, "LOS ANGELES."
  • Vitreous insert: Trinidad Chambliss, "QUARTERBACK."
  • Black Color Blast and Black Stained Glass Duals: the case hits above.

Checklist Insider says "Teased signers include Drew Brees, Gunner Stockton and Peyton Manning." It also notes the wider player pool comes "thanks to the inclusion of college athletes." Checklist Insider has since posted a checklist marked "SUBJECT TO CHANGE": "99 cards" in the base set, with "No card #49 listed." We found no checklist from Panini itself on October 15, so treat that count as secondary.

Release date and odds for 2026 Panini Obsidian Football

Release date: October 21, secondary. DK Network's October calendar lists Obsidian on October 21 and adds a general caveat that release dates move. Checklist Insider's "Estimated Release Date" list gives "Hobby - October 21, 2026" and "FOTL - October 13, 2026." Panini's store listed "2026 PANINI OBSIDIAN FOOTBALL TRADING CARD BOX (HOBBY)" as "COMING SOON" with no date when it was read on October 10. Our release calendar carries only dates from a manufacturer's own page, so Obsidian is not on it yet.

Odds: none published. We found no Panini odds sheet for Obsidian on October 10, 2026. RookieDesk takes odds only from the manufacturer's sheet, with the box format it applies to, so there are no ratios here and nothing to enter in the chance-to-pull calculator.

Price: not listed. Panini's store gave no price that we could read, and we do not use resale listings as a price. The one Panini price we found is for First Off the Line: DK Network says Panini's Dutch auction opened "at 12 p.m. ET on October 13" and "began at $750 and dropped every five minutes to a $300 floor."

Community: what collectors said about the last Obsidian boxes

Obsidian is a one-pack box, so every card in it counts, and collectors talk about that. In a March 2025 r/footballcards thread on an earlier Obsidian box, u/SleeperCards wrote: "Upvote for showing people what a normal box of Obsidian looks like though. I wish we had more of these than "LOOK I PULLED A DOWNTOWN" posts" (comment). In the same thread u/Ruck90 wrote: "I love the design but for the price Panini shouldn’t be putting sticker autos in them" (comment).

Our take

Based on Panini's post and the sources cited above: 2026 Panini Obsidian Football is easy to describe and hard to price in odds. The Hobby box is seven cards, with two autographs and two memorabilia cards on Panini's list, the FOTL box adds its exclusives, and the case hits are named. What is missing is everything a buyer would use to compare it with a Topps product: a Panini-confirmed date, a Panini checklist and an odds sheet. Until those appear, the fixed facts are the box lines above, and the box's own "on average" wording is the one to hold Panini to.

Frequently Asked Questions

The six questions above cover the release date, the Hobby box, First Off the Line, case hits, licensing and odds.

When does 2026 Panini Obsidian Football come out?
Secondary calendars list October 21, 2026 for Hobby boxes: DK Network has it on that date and Checklist Insider calls October 21 an estimated release date. First Off the Line came first: DK Network says Panini opened its FOTL auction on October 13. Panini's own store showed the hobby box as Coming Soon with no date when we checked on October 10, 2026, so treat the date as unconfirmed by Panini.

What comes in a 2026 Panini Obsidian Football hobby box?
Panini's blog lists one pack of seven cards per hobby box: one patch autograph, one other autograph, two memorabilia cards, one insert or insert parallel and two base cards or base parallels. The box art itself says two autographs and two memorabilia cards per box, on average.

What is the difference between Obsidian Hobby and First Off the Line?
Panini says the First Off the Line box has everything in the Hobby box plus extra guaranteed pulls. Its list swaps the patch autograph for a FOTL-exclusive one and adds a FOTL-exclusive parallel, with Deep Sea Mojo, Lava Flow and Neon FOTL chases. Checklist Insider, a secondary source, says both exclusives are numbered to 21 or less.

What are the case hits in 2026 Panini Obsidian Football?
Panini names Black Color Blast and Black Stained Glass as the case hits, and the box side calls them ultra-rare. Panini's sample cards show a Black Color Blast of Julian Sayin and a Black Stained Glass Duals card pairing Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson. No case-hit odds were published when we checked.

Is 2026 Panini Obsidian Football licensed by the NFL?
Fanatics Collectibles announced in April 2026 that its Topps brand is the NFL and NFLPA's exclusive trading card licensee. Checklist Insider says Obsidian is no longer NFL licensed and mixes former pros with current NIL stars. Panini's sample cards print city or school names, such as New Orleans and Ohio State.

Are there odds for 2026 Panini Obsidian Football?
Not that we could find on October 10, 2026. Panini's blog post lists what each box contains but prints no 1:N ratios, and we found no Panini odds sheet. RookieDesk publishes odds only from the manufacturer's sheet with the box format, so this guide lists box contents instead.

How we checked this

Box contents, named players and case hits come from Panini America's blog post of October 7, 2026, read in full on October 10, 2026, and from the box and card images in that post, each opened before we described it. Panini's store status comes from a browser read of paniniamerica.net on October 10; later that day Panini's product page returned no readable product text to our reader and a Cloudflare error to our browser. The licensing line comes from NFL.com. Checklist Insider and DK Network are secondary sources, labelled where used. The Reddit comments were read on the thread's feed on October 10. On October 15 we re-read Panini's post, Checklist Insider, DK Network, NFL.com and the two Reddit comments: Checklist Insider had added a checklist and the FOTL date, and DK Network the FOTL auction. The line count is RookieDesk's arithmetic. We have not opened this product. Full source table: data/sources/2026-panini-obsidian-football-checklist.sources.md.
