2026 Topps Heritage Football Checklist and Box Guide
2026 Topps Heritage Football has a 400-card base set with 100 rookies, three box formats and 34 Walter Payton PSA redemptions. What the checklist shows.

2026 Topps Heritage Football is the first Heritage Football set in a decade, and its checklist is out ahead of the October 21 release. Below is what Topps has published: the full checklist, the three box formats and what each one promises, with every count taken from Topps' own PDF on October 10, 2026.
TL;DR: 1976 design, 400-card base set (408 lines), 100 Rookie-tagged base cards. Hobby: 20 packs of eight, one autograph or relic per box. Value Box: eight packs of eight. Mega Box: 17 packs of eight. Hobby and Value on October 21, Mega on November 4 (Topps). The checklist adds 34 redemptions for graded 1976 Walter Payton rookie cards. No Topps odds sheet yet.
2026 Topps Heritage Football: the short version (quick answer)
2026 Topps Heritage Football recreates the 1976 Topps Football design on a 400-card base set with 100 rookies. Hobby boxes hold 20 packs of eight and one autograph or relic; Topps' box guide names no hit for Value or Mega boxes. Topps lists Hobby and Value for October 21 and Mega for November 4.
Key Takeaways
- Design: 1976 Topps Football, the 50th anniversary of that set, per Topps Ripped.
- Release: Hobby and Value Boxes October 21, Mega Boxes November 4, from Topps' product page read the morning of October 10.
- Base set: numbered 1 to 400, 408 checklist lines, 100 Rookie-tagged cards by our count.
- Hobby: 20 packs of eight cards (160 cards), one autograph or relic in every box.
- Chase: 34 Walter Payton Rookie Redemptions for graded 1976 Payton cards, PSA 6 to PSA 10.
- Odds: none published by Topps as of October 10, 2026.
Overview
Topps Ripped's product history says Heritage Football "debuted in 2001 as part of Topps' 50th anniversary lineup," on the 1956 Topps Football design. It came back in 2006 on the 1952 Topps Baseball design, then "went on hiatus until 2015," when a 60th Anniversary Autograph Edition used the 1956 design again "across a 100-card base set." The 2026 set is "the brand's next installment after a decade away."
This year's base design is 1976 Topps Football. Topps calls the release one "celebrating its 50th anniversary," and the history page says the base set recreates the 1976 design, "marking the cover treatment for Walter Payton's rookie card." That explains the most unusual section on the checklist, covered below.

Three Topps documents carry the facts here. The official checklist PDF runs 22 pages. Topps' box guide on Topps Ripped, dated September 25, 2026, describes the formats, and the collector guide, dated October 9, picks out the top cards. Counts marked "our count" are lines we tallied in the PDF ourselves.
Analysis: 2026 Topps Heritage Football box formats
Topps sells 2026 Topps Heritage Football in three formats. Only Hobby promises a hit, and each format has its own border parallel. The box guide puts it this way: Hobby "includes one autograph or relic card in every box and the widest run of exclusive parallels," while the Value Box is "an accessible way to build the 1976-inspired base set."
| Format | Packs x cards | Cards per box (our math) | Guaranteed | Format-exclusive parallels | Release (Topps) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby | 20 x 8 | 160 | One autograph or relic | Dark Gray Border, Flip Stock, Black Border; Light Blue Sparkle Chrome | October 21 |
| Value Box | 8 x 8 | 64 | Nothing stated | Dark Green Border; Pink Sparkle Chrome | October 21 |
| Mega Box | 17 x 8 | 136 | Nothing stated | Red Border; Silver Sparkle Chrome | November 4 |
The formats and parallels come from the box guide; the dates come from Topps' product page, which read "Hobby & Value Boxes available October 21, Mega Boxes available November 4" when we opened it on the morning of October 10. By the afternoon that page and Topps' release calendar returned a Cloudflare block to our browser, so we could not re-read them.
Prices are not on any Topps page we could read. Checklist Insider, a secondary source, wrote that "Topps presales appeared on September 21, 2026" with Hobby boxes at $129.99, Mega Boxes at $49.99 and "Value Blasters" at $24.99 (read October 10, 2026). At $129.99, a Hobby box works out to about $0.81 per card across 160 cards, by our math.

Analysis: the 2026 Topps Heritage Football checklist in numbers
The base set runs from card 1 (Myles Garrett, Record Breakers) to card 400 (Micah Parsons). The checklist has 408 base lines because the eight League Leaders numbers, 201 to 208, each list two players: card 201 names both Matthew Stafford and Drake Maye, for example.
Base subsets, by our count of the PDF:
- Record Breakers: cards 1 to 8, from Myles Garrett to Jacoby Brissett.
- League Leaders: cards 201 to 208, sixteen players on eight cards.
- Championship Games: card 331 (2026 AFC Championship Game) and 332 (NFC), then card 333, Super Bowl LX.
- Team Cards: 351 to 382, one for each of the 32 clubs.
- Rookies: 100 base cards tagged "Rookie," one in four of the 400 numbers.
Card image: Topps (Topps Ripped collector guide)
A "Base Cards Chrome Variation" section repeats the base list, 408 lines long. It has one apparent typo: Aidan Hutchinson is printed as 142 there, while his base card is 259 and 142 is A.J. Terrell. Topps' collector guide lists the "Base Set: 400 cards, including Record Breaker, League Leaders, and Team Cards subsets."
Variations
Heritage is known for photo variations, and the checklist lists six kinds besides Chrome:
| Variation (checklist name) | Cards | Rookie-tagged | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image Variation | 50 | 19 | 37 Drake Maye |
| Black and White Image Variation | 30 | 10 | 7 Tom Brady |
| No Name Variation | 20 | 0 | 35 Bijan Robinson |
| Flipped Helmet Variation | 20 | 0 | 41 Tee Higgins |
| Alternate Jersey Variation | 20 | 0 | 35 Bijan Robinson |
| Legend Variation | 10 | 0 | 148 Walter Payton |
Topps Ripped's history page calls the Image Variations "short-printed." The checklist itself does not mark short prints or print runs. One naming conflict: the box guide lists a "Nickname" variation, and the checklist has no section by that name; it has "No Name Variation" instead. We go by the checklist.
The Legend Variations put retired players on current card numbers: Fred Biletnikoff on 25, Terry Bradshaw on 75, Walter Payton on 148 and Roger Staubach on 395, among ten.

Inserts
Five insert sets, 100 cards in all by our count:
| Insert | Cards | Numbering | What it is (Topps) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Age Performers | 20 | NAP-1 to NAP-20 | Rising talent; starts with Jaxson Dart |
| All Pro Series | 24 | APS-1 to APS-24 | Homage to the 24-card 1976 Wonder Bread set |
| Through the Years | 20 | TTY-1 to TTY-20 | Past seasons, Jack Lambert to Cam Ward |
| Sweetness | 8 | S-1 to S-8 | Running backs, Emmitt Smith to Christian McCaffrey |
| The Expansion | 28 | TE-1 to TE-28 | The 28 teams of the 1976 league |
The box guide says All-Pro Series has "24 All-Pro standouts from the 2025 NFL season" and The Expansion covers "the 28 teams in the league at the time." The collector guide adds that 1976 Topps "was the first set featuring cards of two expansion franchises: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks."

Analysis: 2026 Topps Heritage Football rookies, autographs and relics
Rookies drive most of the hit checklist. Of the 16 autograph, relic, cut signature and autograph relic sections on the PDF, seven are made up only of Rookie-tagged lines, by our count.
Rookies with the most checklist lines. Counting every line that names the player (base, Chrome, variations, inserts and hits), the top of the class looks like this:
| Rookie | Base card | Team on checklist | Checklist lines (our count) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeremiyah Love | 133 | Arizona Cardinals | 16 |
| Fernando Mendoza | 272 | Las Vegas Raiders | 16 |
| Ty Simpson | 288 | Los Angeles Rams | 15 |
| Garrett Nussmeier | 320 | Kansas City Chiefs | 15 |
| Carnell Tate | 305 | Tennessee Titans | 13 |
| Carson Beck | 310 | Arizona Cardinals | 13 |
| Makai Lemon | 18 | Philadelphia Eagles | 12 |
| Jordyn Tyson | 225 | New Orleans Saints | 12 |
Line counts measure how many different cards a player has, not how rare any one of them is.
Autographs. Six autograph sections: Founding Era Ink (27, all rookies), Heritage Rookie Autographs (36), Classic Renditions Autograph (26), Real One Autographs (38), Real One Rookie Autographs (45) and the Base Cards Chrome Autograph Variation (32, 14 of them rookies). Topps calls the Chrome autographs "short-printed" and says Real One Autographs come with "Red Ink versions." The collector guide shows a Gold Heritage Rookie Autograph of Jadarian Price "limited to only 50 copies." Our explainer on numbered cards covers what a /50 means.
Card image: Topps (Topps Ripped collector guide)
Relics and autograph relics. Gridiron Collection Relics (25), Rookie Lineage Relics (40), Locker Room Relics (21) and Real One Relics (5), plus five autograph relic sets: Gridiron Collection Relic Autographs (23), Locker Room Autograph Relics (19), Bicentennial Relic Autographs (15), Rookie Lineage Autographed Relics (23) and Flashbacks Autographed Relics (4: Dan Fouts, Drew Pearson, Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw).
Walter Payton. The checklist has five Cut Signatures cards, CA-WP1 to CA-WP5, all Walter Payton; the box guide describes "A Walter Payton Cut Signature Auto numbered to 1." Then come 34 Walter Payton Rookie Redemptions, each for a graded 1976 Topps Walter Payton card:
| Redemption grade | Cards | Numbers |
|---|---|---|
| PSA 10 | 1 | WPRR-1 |
| PSA 9 | 3 | WPRR-2 to 4 |
| PSA 8 | 5 | WPRR-5 to 9 |
| PSA 7 | 12 | WPRR-10 to 21 |
| PSA 6 | 13 | WPRR-22 to 34 |
The box guide also mentions a "1976 Original Buyback Autograph series signed by Jack Lambert and Fred Biletnikoff." We found no buyback section on the September checklist, so we cannot say how many exist. For what a PSA grade costs to get on your own cards, see our PSA grading fees breakdown.

Odds: what Topps has published so far
Nothing yet. On the morning of October 10, 2026, Topps' Heritage Football product page offered a "Download checklist" link and no odds file. Topps usually posts odds next to the checklist on the product page, as it did for 2026 Heritage Baseball. Until a Topps sheet appears, any Heritage Football odds you see come from somebody else, and we do not use them.
What the box guide does promise is in the table above: one autograph or relic per Hobby box. The checklist's own footer warns that "actual contents and odds may vary."
Community: what collectors are saying
The September 21 preorder thread on r/footballcards was mostly about autographs and sellouts. u/foshiiy wrote: "Man I'm really disappointed with the changes Topps is making between the same product/different sports. Heritage baseball has always been game used and on card auto. Football looks like neither." (comment). u/Critical_Membership9 added: "Heritage is generally more known as a set for set-builders (i.e. me) than one full of nukes. Which makes it even more frustrating that the hobby boxes sold out within 90 seconds." (comment). Those are opinions and one buyer's account; Topps' pages do not say whether the autographs are on-card or stickers, and we could not confirm the sellout time.
Our take
Based on Topps' checklist and box guides: Hobby is the only format that promises a hit, and every autograph and relic section sits behind that one-per-box line. Value and Mega are base-set and parallel boxes with their own border colors. The rookie class is the center of the product. A quarter of the base numbers carry a Rookie tag, and seven hit sections are rookie-only. The Payton redemptions are the rarest named pulls on the checklist, but without an odds sheet nobody can say how rare. We would wait for Topps' odds before comparing formats on anything other than pack counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
The six most common questions, release date, base set size, hobby box contents, odds, the Payton redemption and the top rookies, are answered in the FAQ block on this page.

Topps' product page, read on the morning of October 10, 2026, said Hobby and Value Boxes arrive October 21 and Mega Boxes November 4. Topps' release calendar listed Heritage Football on Wednesday, October 21. Release dates can move, so check the Topps page in release week.
How many cards are in the 2026 Topps Heritage Football base set?
The base set is numbered 1 to 400. Topps' checklist has 408 base lines because cards 201 to 208 are League Leaders cards that each name two players. By our count, 100 base cards carry a Rookie tag, and cards 351 to 382 are Team Cards for all 32 NFL clubs.
How many packs are in a 2026 Topps Heritage Football hobby box?
Topps' box guide on Topps Ripped says a Hobby box holds 20 packs of eight base cards with one autograph or relic card in every box, which is 160 cards by our math. The Value Box holds eight packs of eight and the Mega Box 17 packs of eight. Only Hobby names a hit.
Are there odds for 2026 Topps Heritage Football yet?
Not that we could find. On the morning of October 10, 2026, the Topps product page offered a checklist download and no odds file, and our search of Topps' file host and Topps Ripped found no Heritage Football odds sheet. We will add the odds when Topps posts them.
What is the Walter Payton redemption in 2026 Heritage Football?
The checklist lists 34 Walter Payton Rookie Redemption cards, WPRR-1 to WPRR-34, each for a graded 1976 Topps Walter Payton card. One is a PSA 10, three are PSA 9, five PSA 8, twelve PSA 7 and thirteen PSA 6. Topps does not list their odds yet.
Which rookies are in 2026 Topps Heritage Football?
The checklist tags 100 base cards as Rookie. Fernando Mendoza (272, Raiders) and Jeremiyah Love (133, Cardinals) each appear on 16 checklist lines by our count, the most of any rookie. Ty Simpson and Garrett Nussmeier follow with 15 lines each.
How we checked this
Checklist counts come from Topps' checklist PDF, downloaded on October 10, 2026 and extracted with a PDF text reader; we counted sections and Rookie tags ourselves. Box formats from the Topps Ripped box guide, history page and collector guide, read in a browser the same day. Release dates from Topps' product page and release calendar, read the morning of October 10 (both returned a Cloudflare block that afternoon). Prices are from secondary sources and labelled.
