The eBay Authenticity Guarantee sends a qualifying card to PSA before it reaches you. As of October 11, 2026, eBay's own pages put the floor at $200 for both raw and graded singles. This guide covers what PSA checks, which slabs qualify, what is excluded, and where eBay's pages disagree with each other.

TL;DR: Eligible single sports cards that sell for $200 or more on eBay in the US go to PSA first. Raw cards get "a multi-point inspection" and a check against the listing; graded cards get a case and label check with "No regrading." Accepted slabs: PSA, SGC, CGC (including CSG) and BGS. No fee to buyer or seller; the buyer page adds "for a limited time." A failed card means "a full refund." eBay's buyer and seller pages give different signature thresholds ($1,500 vs $750).

eBay Authenticity Guarantee for sports cards (quick answer)

When an eligible card sells, "the seller ships the item directly to the authentication facility," eBay says. PSA, which eBay names as its official authenticator, inspects it "within one to two business days of receipt," then ships it on "with tracked four-day shipping." The program is a check on authenticity and on the listing; it does not assign a grade or value.

Key Takeaways

  • Price floor: "$200 and above for ungraded cards, and $200 and above for autograph, relic, and other graded cards" (eBay, read October 11, 2026).
  • Authenticator: PSA, for raw and graded cards.
  • Graded cards: case and label checked for tampering; "No regrading is performed."
  • Accepted graders: PSA, SGC, CGC (including CSG) and BGS.
  • Excluded: sets, lots, boxes, packs, raw redemption cards, local pickup only and P.O. Box addresses.
  • Fees: none to buyer or seller at the time of writing, "for a limited time" on the buyer page.
  • Failure: "a full refund to your original payment method."

Overview: what the eBay Authenticity Guarantee covers

eBay describes the program as independent: "Authenticity Guarantee is independent from, and not associated with, any brands sold on eBay." Buyers spot eligible listings by a badge: "just look for the checkmark." The table summarizes eBay's trading card pages as read on October 11, 2026.

Not everything qualifies: "Sets, lots, kits, decks, boxes, packs, art cards, and raw redemption cards are not eligible at this time." Neither are "Listings that offer only local pickup or items shipped to P.O. Boxes." The single must also sit in the right eBay category to qualify. If you are new to buying singles, our beginner guide to collecting explains the card types you will see in these listings.

Analysis: what PSA checks on a raw card

For ungraded cards, eBay says "PSA experts verify authenticity through a multi-point inspection, and then carefully review listing details for accuracy." That review includes "checking the corners, edges, surface and overall condition of the card to ensure it matches the listing description and is authentic."

Two limits follow from eBay's own wording. The program does not grade: "Please note, there is no grading or re-grading in this process," and the terms say in capitals that it "DOES NOT INCLUDE GRADING SERVICES." A raw card that passes is a genuine card in the condition the listing showed, not a card with a number on it. What PSA would actually grade it, and what that costs, is a separate question covered in our PSA grading fees guide.

Analysis: what happens to a graded card

For slabs, "PSA experts authenticate each case and label. No regrading is performed." The check means "inspecting the sealed plastic holder for signs of tampering and verifying that the case and label are authentic to the grader." eBay accepts cards graded by "Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA); Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC)," plus "CGC Cards; and Beckett Grading Services (BGS)." The terms section words the CGC entry as "Certified Collectibles Group's affiliates, CGC Trading Cards, Certified Sports Guaranty (CSG)."

There is a consequence for sellers of fake PSA slabs: if a holder "is found to be fake or exhibit signs of tampering, PSA will deactivate its certificate and issue a notice to the seller." How the graders count the slabs that pass through their hands is in our pop report explainer, and the warning signs of an altered card inside a real slab are in our guide to spotting a trimmed sports card.

Analysis: fees, shipping, refunds and returns

Fees. eBay's buyer FAQ: "eBay covers the cost of authentication and tracked shipping from the authentication facility to you for a limited time." The seller page: "eBay covers the cost of authentication and secure shipping from the authentication facility to the buyer." The terms add: "Services are provided at no cost to sellers and buyers." Note the "limited time" wording, which leaves eBay room to change it.

Delays. A service notice on the buyer page said "some Authenticity Guarantee orders may be delayed for 7 days or more" when we read it on October 11, 2026.

If the card fails. "If the authenticator cannot verify the item's authenticity or if the item is not consistent with its listing, you will be issued a full refund to your original payment method." eBay also says the program "is backed by eBay Money Back Guarantee."

Returns. If a card arrives damaged, "you can open a return request on a final sale card so long as you do so within three days of receiving the card." On a return, "Within two business days of receiving the item, the authenticator will re-verify that the raw card or sealed plastic holder is authentic." One exception: "items shipping internationally to the U.S. are ineligible for returns."

Analysis: where eBay's pages disagree, and how the floor moved

On October 11, 2026, eBay's two trading card pages gave different signature rules. The buyer page: "Yes, it is required for cards $1,500 and above." The seller page: "Yes, it is required for cards $750 and above." We could not open eBay's Help pages to settle it (they returned a captcha), so until the pages agree, the seller page's $750 is the lower of the two figures.

RookieDesk chart comparing eBay Authenticity Guarantee rules on the buyer page and the seller page as read October 11, 2026: price floor $200 on both, signature required at $1,500 on the buyer page and $750 on the seller page, no fee on both Chart: RookieDesk, from eBay's buyer and seller trading card pages (read October 11, 2026)

The price floor has moved before. eBay's May 2022 press release said that "when a graded card is sold for $2,000+ in the U.S., the seller will send that graded card to PSA," that "Over time, this service will expand to any graded card sold for $250+," and that "Certified Collectibles Group (CCG) will continue authenticating single, ungraded trading cards sold for $250+." Today's pages name PSA as the only authenticator, still accept CGC slabs, and list $200 for both. Value Added Resource reported in October 2024 that "PSA is now officially the sole provider of authentication services for both raw and graded trading cards sold through eBay's Authenticity Guarantee program." Forum answers that quote $250 do not match eBay's current pages.

Community: what collectors say the check does and does not do

A January 2025 Collectors Universe thread asked how eBay card authentication works. Sonnys88 answered: "PSA is the authenticator for eBay. All cards that qualify for the AG program go to PSA for inspection / authentication." RufussCkingston summed up the graded check as "making sure the slab is not fake/tampered and that what is pictured in the listing is what is actually shipped." Not everyone was satisfied; bgr wrote: "The guarantee is supposed to verify that the item is what is being sold in the listing. It doesn’t do a very good job in my opinion." (thread)

Our take

Based on eBay's pages and the reports cited above: for a $200-plus single, we read the Authenticity Guarantee as a free authenticity check by PSA, and under eBay's refund rule a buyer whose card fails gets a full refund. It is not an appraisal. It does not grade a raw card, it does not regrade a slab, and collectors in the thread above say it can miss listing details. Read the listing as if the check did not exist, and check the signature rule on eBay's page before you ship or buy, since eBay's two pages disagree.

Frequently Asked Questions

The six questions above cover the price threshold, who authenticates, regrading, fees, failed cards and who can use the program.

What is the eBay Authenticity Guarantee price threshold for trading cards?
As of October 11, 2026, eBay's trading card page lists $200 and above for ungraded cards and $200 and above for autograph, relic and other graded cards. The seller page says single ungraded and graded cards at $200+ are eligible. For auctions, the final sale price counts, not the starting price.

Who authenticates cards for eBay?
PSA. eBay's buyer page says its partners at Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) are its official authenticators. The seller ships the card to the authentication facility instead of to the buyer, and PSA inspects it before it is forwarded.

Does eBay regrade a graded card?
No. eBay says that for graded cards PSA experts authenticate each case and label, and that no regrading is performed. The check looks for signs of tampering and confirms the holder and label are authentic to the grader. Slabs from PSA, SGC, CGC (including Certified Sports Guaranty, CSG) and BGS are accepted.

Is there a fee for eBay Authenticity Guarantee?
Not at the time of writing. eBay's buyer FAQ says it covers the cost of authentication and tracked shipping from the facility to the buyer for a limited time, and the seller page says eBay covers the cost of authentication and secure shipping. Check the page before you rely on it, since the buyer wording says limited time.

What happens if a card fails eBay authentication?
eBay's buyer page says that if the authenticator cannot verify the item's authenticity, or the item is not consistent with its listing, you get a full refund to your original payment method. If a graded holder is fake or tampered with, PSA deactivates its certificate and notifies the seller.

Can buyers outside the US use it?
Not under the terms we read. eBay says buyers must be located in the US and sellers in the US or Canada. US territories such as Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and US Armed Forces postal addresses, are not covered.
